Remove tags and wash items as you get them

Before storing any baby clothes, take the time to remove all tags and labels and wash the item.. Baby’s skin is more sensitive than ours so washing clothing, blankets and other items before use is essential to prevent irritation. By taking the time to do this, all items will be ready to use as and when you need them.

Sort by size

One of the easiest ways to organise your baby’s clothing is to sort by size. If you take one look at your collection of baby clothes and more than likely you will find items ranging in sizes from newborn to sizes your little one won’t be wearing for at least a year.

Avoid the disappointment of finding a cute outfit only to discover its the incorrect size by getting garments grouped by size now. You should keep all clothes of one size in each drawer or if your space is limited use storage boxes or bags to store the bigger sizes.

The beauty of organising by size is that you can quickly move things around as your baby transitions between sizes

You should group items in the following sizes:

  • Newborn

  • 0-3 months

  • 3-6 months

  • 6-9 months

  • 9-12 months

  • 12-18 months

  • 18-24 months

Group items by category

You’ll soon come to realise that babies can go through multiple changes of outfit per day! Plus they have items for sleeping such as baby grows and pyjamas as well as clothing to wear out and about and a host of accessories such as hats, socks , muslins etc.

To make things a bit simpler when selecting outfits you should group and store items by category such as babygrows, leggings, t-shirts…

By designating categories of clothing to one drawer or section in your baby’s wardrobe, you will find it much easier to find what you’re looking for when you need it the most! No need rifling through messy drawers - you’ll have a streamlined process in which you can make your baby comfortable in just minutes.

File-fold items

When items are stacked on top of each other inside a drawer, it makes it impossible to see what is where and thus keep things organised. You’ll more likely than not forget what is at the bottom and you’’ end up rifling through the folded clothes at the top to find what’s underneath.

By file-folding your baby’s clothing, you’ll be able to see every baby grow, vest and pair of leggings. You’ll be able to easily select items and have no need to mess up the other folding!

Add drawer dividers

As baby clothes are so small, you may struggle to fill up drawer space and categories may eventually become muddled through opening and closing of the drawers.

Adding dividers to the drawers will enable you to keep categories separate from each other.

The addition of drawer dividers will also make it easier for other caregivers to recognise which item is located where as well as make it easier to return items of clothing to the correct location within the drawers.

Add labels

Labels are a small detail that will have a huge impact on the usability and maintenance of your baby’s wardrobe organisation. Whilst you could attempt to memorise exactly where every item belongs, that is not helpful when people other than yourself are taking care of the baby.

Adding detailed labels to every drawer will ensure that everything is easy to find. Each label should identify the clothing type and size allowing you to see at a glance what is located where.

Why not also label other areas of the nursery such as the hanging rail, changing station, toy bins and baskets for corralling other baby items.

Use bins as additional storage

If drawer space is limited and you have shelving available in your nursery, why not store some items inside bins placed on the shelves. Choose bins that fit with the aesthetic of the nursery and group items by category within. For example one bin may contain shoes, another winter accessories etc.

Store baby changing essentials in the top drawers

Creating an organised and functional baby nursery is all about strategy. Think about the items you will need on hand most regularly; nappies, wipes, baby grows, vests, socks, muslins, etc. and place these in the top drawer of the dresser where they will be most accessible.

Store most used items in the middle drawers

In the middle drawers of the dresser you should store everyday essential clothing items. This may include t-shirts, leggings, shorts, jumpers, pyjamas.

In order to make full use of each drawer, store items within their categories in rows so you are able to easily grab what you need from each row and thus change your little one with ease!

Store less frequently used items in the bottom drawer

In the bottom, least accessible drawer you should store any bulky  items and other items that are used less often. This might include snow suits, swimwear, back up linens and towels etc.

Keep a donation bin on the go

If you’re keen to keep your baby’s wardrobe uncluttered and free up space, donate any clothing that your baby has outgrown or will no longer wear.

Place a donation bin somewhere in the nursery and regularly sort through your little one’s clothing. If an item is too small and will no longer be used for your family, set it aside for donation.
